Optimizing Your Online Business For Search Engine Performance

Tuesday 17 June 2008 @ 7:07 pm

Optimizing your online business for search engine performance on the Internet is a cost-effective, efficient way of generating natural, qualified sales leads on an ongoing basis. No other form of marketing allows you to bring in constant, responsive prospects for such little outlay.

What’s more, on the Internet there are simple ways you can fine-tune your website to make your web pages more attractive to search engines. The first thing you have to do is to make sure that each page has its own unique title bar. The title bar is right at the top above the URL.

The second thing to consider when attempting to optimize your business for Internet search engines is the requirements for keywords. While there is no magic number or secret formula to keyword density, it is important that your website contains keywords somewhere in the body and header text, and that it also contains semantically related terms to appeal to modern search engine algorithms.

Generally, the best approach is to make your website content informative and relevant to the keywords you are attempting to target, trying to appear as natural as possible in order to benefit from the optimum ranking. It’s also important to ensure so far as is possible that you include your main keyword in the title tags as this will also play a role in how Internet search engines interpret and index your website.

Thirdly, but potentially most important, is the link building process. Link building can be conducted in a number of different forms, and ideally it should be a natural process with other websites linking to you in recommendation of your content, although more often than not there is at least some degree of manipulation involved.

One of the main ways of building links is through article marketing, in which informative content is submitted to article directories online with links published back to the author’s website. These links are often to internal pages to boost overall search engine rankings and the link text (also known as ‘anchor text’) should read your keyword or a variation thereof. Ultimately by carrying on this process and continuing to build your article numbers you should build up a number of back links to your website which should promote your site in the listings under your key search terms, allowing more search engine users to stumble upon your Internet business.

Finally do not forget your web address. It should also relate to the business you are in because search engines are allocating points to websites that contain the keyword that people are searching for.

Promoting your Internet business through the search engines might sound a little confusing and tricky to start with, but underlying it all are some pretty basic principles that you can adhere to. This will help to create serious momentum behind your Internet business and to drive continual sales leads over the longer term. By combining the off-page link building methods and the on-page fine tuning techniques demonstrated above, you can achieve some degree of success in your business online, and drive cost-effective, targeted sales leads on a daily basis without too much ongoing work or expense.

Interesting Business And Internet Facts

Wednesday 28 May 2008 @ 11:25 pm

Do you want to learn some interesting business and internet facts? The development of the internet and the World Wide Web is a fascinating subject, round which fortunes have been made and reputations established.

Internet business is the fastest growing form of business on the planet, and is available to everybody irrespective of their business acumen or financial know-how. You might say that you already know about the internet since you are using it every day, but how well do you really know about it and its development?

Many people get confused by the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web. The early internet development was carried out largely by the Department of Defense in the USA, while the WWW was invented by Englishman Tim Berners-Lee some 20 years later.

They are different entities, and the way to explain the difference is to take the telephone as an analogy. If your computer is the analogue of your telephone set, then your IP address is your telephone number, specific to your telephone, the World Wide Web consists of all file addresses that can publicly be connected to each other (e.g. equiv. to conversations that you have by telephone) and the internet is the means by which they are connected – the telephone cables and wireless connections.

Thus, the web consists of all the files, that can be text, images, videos and so on that can be accessed by means of hyperlinks from one IP address to the specific file location on another IP address, and passed between IP addresses using the internet.

Although the World Wide Web started in 1990, we can trace the roots of the Internet to as early as the 1950s to 1960s. It was actually started after the Russians launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, and the American military became afraid of the conquest of space by the Russians. They became conscious of the need for swift computer communication round the world in the interest of defense.

It was in 1962 that the DARPA or Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency was formed, and in 1969 the first internet officially went live, referred to as the ARPANET. It was the idea of a man who is aptly called the father of the internet, J.C.R. Licklider. His idea, that he called the Galactic Network, is considered to be the seed of the Internet.

Who knew back then that internet business would flourish as it did? Aside from Licklider, Vinton Gray Cerf is considered to be one of the forefathers of the Internet. Cerf developed the TCP/IP protocols needed for the transfer of packetized files, and in doing that, he played a key role in the development of the internet.

The first long distance connection was also developed in the 1960s, by MIT researcher Lawrence G. Roberts and Thomas Merrill in 1965. They connected the TX-2 computer from Massachusetts to a Q-32 computer in California. However, the phone lines during that time could not handle internet technology and it was some time before such technology was commonplace.

Many familiar names can be thrown into the pot, one of which is Al Gore. Many people mistake him as the inventor of the Internet. While it is not true, he actively promoted it, making him a key player in its growth. Al Gore popularized the term “information superhighway” which was coined back in 1974 by Nam June Paik. While the Internet grew over the decades, it was only in the 1990s that the World Wide Web provided the resource by which ordinary people could have easy access to the internet. Home computers were common by then, but internet access was still in its infancy.

It was in 1993 that the first known web browser, Mosaic, was released. The radio media took 38 years for them to have 50 million users or listeners. The television took 13 years while the Internet only needed 5 years to achieve the same volume of usage. Much of that had to do with reduced costs, of course, but it was a significant achievement nevertheless.

A little known fact is that only about a third of internet communication is in English, the most common of the other two thirds being in Chinese and Spanish. North America has the largest continental concentration at 70%. On the other hand, the country with highest percentage of Internet users is Sweden at 75%. Another interesting fact about the Internet business is the number of pages or indices there are today. According to Google, their index now contains over 8 billion pages and it is still growing rapidly each day.

The internet is the fastest growing business medium, and if you are interested in having your own business, it is by means of the internet that you are most likely to achieve success. Home business franchises are a popular option to the traditional style of business since most of the set-up work has been done for you, and many are virtually turnkey operations.

Top 10 Tips For Promoting Your Business Through Social Networks

Saturday 24 May 2008 @ 6:20 am

Nowadays, many businesses are reaping the fruits of the internet, especially with the advertising opportunities that the internet offers. One of the ways to advertise or promote businesses is through the emerging online social networks.

You may not notice but quite a few businesses nowadays are advertising through several social networks such as MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, LinkedIn, Hi5, and Tagged among many similar sites. Some may be cynical or disbelieving when it comes to making use of social networking sites to promote their businesses, but that is only because they are not truly acquainted with the potential that these sites have.

If you need persuasion, think about the many people accessing such social networking sites on not only daily, but also on an hour to hour and even minute to minute basis. Imagine a stronger web presence for your business. Most competitors have already joined the trend so why don’t you join in the fun? You’ll have more potential clients and you’ll build more credibility.

Perhaps you might think that advertising on a social site may not be a good image for your business. Some social networking sites are mainly patronized by teenagers, so if your business is not something for the kids, then it might not be of much benefit for you to do so. However, word of mouth is still such a powerful tool to market and promote a business.

A teenager telling his or her mom or dad about what they saw in the Internet is just an example. This is the beginnings of the very powerful word of mouth marketing, and many buzzes now start on social networking sites. Here are ten tips that will help you in promoting your business through such social networks.

1. Try out several social networking sites.

To start with, don’t just focus on just one or two social networking websites. Begin with as many as possible: the opposite of what you might expect to do, but try it. It works with these sites. You can post a photograph of yourself, digital photographs of your company and of your products if you have them, or of your company logo. Write some blogs, make some quizzes or engage in activities until you get noticed.

After you’ve built your presence in multiple networking sites, it’s time to focus on one or two sites that generate positive results. By now you should have seen how people react to it and you’ll know which social networking websites are the most effective for you.

2. Share the company’s public profile.

Lay out your business expertise. Clearly state your credentials. At the same time, make sure that your profile is as attractive as possible. It has to be something that will catch other social networkers’ attention. Also, make sure that your profile is keyword-rich for people using the advanced search features.

3. Make use of applications and widgets.

Most of the social networking websites you’ll see now have their own widgets and applications. Some of these widgets were made for businesses. They have a business page or “About” page made specifically for companies. Make particular use of the Fan page, the News page, and the Events page.

4. Comment on posts or blogs online.

One way to maximize the opportunity of your web presence is by commenting or replying to posts, articles, and blogs you see online. You can leave your signature (with links to your website) after your username. This will help you get noticed even more.

5. Join forums or groups.

When you join forums, you get to engage with other like minded individuals and share your ideas with other people. Then hopefully, they might notice your expertise and may even ask for details of your products or services before you have to offer them.

6. Seek help from expert social networkers.

Social networking is just like traditional networking. The internet just made it easier. So if you want more networkers to notice you ask for help from the experts and find out how best to use this medium. Ask and answers will be forthcoming.

7. Select your friends.

Since you’re creating an account for your business, your friends will matter. Make sure that all your friends are legitimate, trust-worthy, and credible. It doesn’t matter if you only have a few friends. The quality of friends you add to your account is what matters most.

8. Write recommendations for valued clients.

Your clients don’t need to tell you to write them a recommendation. If you feel they are valuable, then recommend them. Not only are you being more credible to your readers by providing genuine information, your clients will be happy and may do the same for you.

9. Promote your blog or online resources.

Blogging or writing articles and providing resources to your readers or clients have proven to be an effective way to drive traffic to your website. So if you have a blog, make sure that you promote it through these networking sites.

10. Use privacy settings.

In order to avoid scam artists and identity theft, make sure that you adjust the privacy settings that can be found in social networking sites. Check what information can be seen by the public and by your friends and adjust accordingly.

Why not start to use social networking sites to the greatest advantage for your online business? Most traditional businesses have no idea how to use this new medium, and if you do then you can have a good and profitable lead on your competitors.

The Business Reasons For Strong Internet Rankings

Thursday 15 May 2008 @ 2:01 pm

Running a modern business needs a least some concept of vital modern technologies, like the Internet and email, in order to keep up with the competition and exploit emerging opportunities to take things to the next level. A crucial part of this awareness is establishing a business website, and understanding the various simple ways you can improve your search engine rankings under your chosen keywords to bring in more traffic and to increase online sales.

Search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, are pretty much the foundation of the Internet as we know it, and if you’re not there, you’re losing out on a range of benefits that come from being visible online. Firstly, being identifiable under your keywords can help your potential customers find your website. Websites that don’t rank well for their most important keywords tend to be less frequently discovered, which means you may be missing out on sales as a result of a poor ranking.

On the Internet, search engines are a crucial driver of traffic, and it’s possible to receive hundreds of thousands of visitors each month, maybe more, with a strong ranking website within your target market. It’s no wonder big business pays millions of dollars to protect and deliver strong search engine rankings. If you’re buried way back on page 50, what real chance have you got of pulling in new visitors that have not already heard of your company or the products you offer?

Outside of the Internet, you market your business by telling others about your products and investing in getting your brand seen and heard. Online, search engines provide a great, low cost opportunity to bring in potential customers to your website, and achieving a strong ranking with your site could help increase customer numbers and drive sales.

Search engines are also a great way of marketing your business because your website will appear any time of the day or night under your chosen key search phrases, and your website should do your marketing and sales for you. It’s like having a permanent, 24/7 advert for your business where you can choose whether or not more people see it by gunning for top rankings. Even when you’re fast asleep or away on vacation, a good search engine ranking could potentially be bringing in fresh customers to your website for no or very little ongoing cost, which could easily be converting into more direct web sales in no time, and providing you with residual financial benefits.

Search engine rankings are crucial to the success of any modern business. For some yet to even take that first step onto the Internet with a basic web presence, search engine manipulation might sound like a daunting prospect. However by taking the time to learn basic SEO principles, or by employing the help of a SEO professional, your business could benefit from an exceptional return on investment through the major search engines, with a long-term positive impact on the success of your website and ultimately your business.

Online Advertising For Small Businesses

Thursday 15 May 2008 @ 2:05 am

If you have a small business then online advertising can help drive traffic to your website. If your business is not yet online, then you would be well advised to have an internet presence since an increasing number of your customers, irrespective of the business you are in, are going online to look for their products and services.

How you do that is another subject, but any business, small or large, has the same problem online: attracting visitors to their websites. People do not just arrive at your site as they would if they were walking round a shopping mall. Sure, your potential customer base is world wide, but the internet is so large that you are unlikely to get any casual visitors that are not seeking your website in particular.

To find out your competition, go to Google.com and enter the keyword for your site or product into your web browser and have a look to the right of the blue line just above the results – that will tell you how many more sites are using the same keyword as you, and that is your competition. For the keyword ‘health foods, for example, that number is over 8 million.

Nobody is going to find your website among another 8 million by chance. You have to direct them to your website by advertising, and here are the main ways for you to achieve that:

1. Pay-Per-Click advertising (PPC). You bid so much for an advert to be shown on the search engine results page for specific keywords, and then pay each time somebody clicks on the advert. The higher you bid, the nearer to the top of Page 1 of the search engine results pages for that keyword your advert will be shown. However, you also pay the amount of your bid for each click, so make sure that your advert is very specific without any ambiguity that could get the wrong people clicking.

If you are selling only 500 mg soluble Vitamin C supplements, don’t advertise just ‘vitamins’ or even ‘Vitamin C’. Advertise ‘Soluble 500 mg Vitamin C Supplements - $xx per 100’. Then the person clicking on your advert will know exactly what you are offering and what they will be paying, thus maximizing your chances of a good click through rate (clicks resulting in sales).

2. Search Engine Optimization: if you can optimize your site well enough to get a good listing in the search engines for your keyword, that is totally free advertising for you day in day out. It is worth doing this to the best of your ability, since although it could take time for your site to be listed, once it has been listed it will remain so for a considerable time, providing you with potentially masses of free traffic.

3. Article marketing can also provide you with free traffic. By writing articles on your niche, and submitting them to article directories, you will not only get a back-link from each directory, so helping your Google PageRank (and hence your search engine listing) but hopefully will also receive a visit from every reader that is so impressed by your article that they want to know more.

The reason for this is that the directories allow you a link back to any page you want on your website from your resource section, in which you can say something about you and your site in addition to providing your URL. Once more, free advertising of which you should take maximum advantage.

4. Ezine advertising can be very profitable, since every niche has at least one ezine relating to it. Check out the internet for ezines relating to your niche using the search term ‘yourniche ezines’ and then contact the owner. Ask for details on advertising, or request a free advertising slot for a free article in return. Many owners of ezines will give you a free advert in return for a good article on the niche.

5. Finally, start a blog. Wordpress and Blogger provide you with free blogs that you can use for any purpose (except certain banned topics). You can use your blog to provide weekly courses on your niche, thus building a regular readership or just to provide updates each time you add content to your website. Put your advert on your own blog, and you could find a lot more traffic visiting your website.

It does not matter how large or small your business is – these suggestions do work. However, they tend to be more successful with small businesses for the simple reason that larger firms tend to ignore such advertising techniques and throw money at more direct ads. The fact that they are missing opportunities appears to miss them.

You, however, can profit enormously by advertising your business as much as possible online. It is possible to this without your business having an online presence, but it is far more effective if you have a website, so get started with that first and then profit from it.
